But she supported bringing back cottage hospitals that once acted as a stepping-stone for patients after treatment and before returning home.Another way to ease pressure on hospitals would be to give pharmacists more responsibility to treat patients – although their sector is also facing its own issues with staffing and retention, said Prof Mason.

The wards had already taken on more patients than they have space for. “We had 22 [patients] in the corridor with no hope of any more beds coming up, no option to divert any ambulances because all the other hospitals in the area were in exactly the same position. It’s difficult to make things more efficient when you’re running beyond capacity.
