For broadcasters, the biggest challenge is finding original shows that audiences want to watch
Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Big Brother, Changing Rooms, Gladiatorshave all been revived. A glut of dating shows has prompted an Edinburgh debate on whether the genre is at “saturation point”.
Producers seeking inspiration for original TV might get it from one of the festival’s star attractions, Jesse Armstrong, the brilliant writer behind. Other power players on stage include Sally Wainwright, the Yorkshirewoman who created, wrote and directed, and Ben Winston , a Hollywood-based producer who has 12 Emmys and makes shows for James Corden and the Kardashians.

Time is short for British broadcasters too. They must take back their share of the industry’s creative power or watch audiences continue to vanish.
