Opening day for the Seattle Mariners includes a chance of thundershowers Thursday afternoon and evening.

The game against the visiting Boston Red Sox starts at 7:10 p.m., so the roof is likely to be closed. That’s a good thing because some of the showers that could be passing by this evening have a chance to be heavy and include some hail.Latest weather forecast

According to the Mariners, it takes 10 to 20 minutes to open or close the retractable roof at T-Mobile Park. There are some rules set by the Mariners and Major League Baseball about when the roof is to be closed. According to the Mariners website, if the roof is open when a game begins, it will be closed if there is impending rain or any other kind of bad weather coming. The decision to close the roof is made by the home club after talking to the umpire crew chief. The visiting club can challenge the opening of the roof if it feels it creates a “competitive imbalance.” Once the roof is closed during a game, it is not reopened.

If the game starts with the roof closed, it may be reopened if the home club feels the weather has improved enough for the enjoyment of the fans according the M’s website.
