THE Department of Justice and the Commission on Elections on Monday signed a memorandum of agreement for the immediate prosecution of election-related offenses under the poll body’s Kontra Bigay program for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections , which will be held on October 30.

The DOJ chief assured that prosecutors would be made available on the ground starting the BSKE election period to handle election-related complaints. Garcia said having the National Prosecution Service of the DOJ on the Comelec side would not only discourage vote buying and selling activities, but would also send a message to election offenders that the government is very serious in filing charges against them once they are caught.

Garcia said the Comelec has so far issued show-cause orders against at least 2,000 individuals for alleged premature campaigning.
