A stranded common dolphin was rescued from the River Fowey in Cornwall after swimming approximately six miles upstream. Volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue successfully transported the dolphin back to the sea.
A female common dolphin was rescued from the River Fowey in Cornwall after swimming about six miles inland. The dolphin was spotted at the edge of Lostwithiel on Sunday, stranded in a shallow section of the river as the tide receded. Volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) were able to wade into the water and transfer the 7ft 3in (2.2m) dolphin onto a stretcher.
They then transported it by car to nearby Polkerris, where it was successfully released back into the open water.Dan Jarvis, from BDMLR, expressed surprise at finding a dolphin so far inland, stating, 'We've never seen one in Lostwithiel before.' He believes the dolphin likely became disoriented while following fish or other food sources upstream. While human activity, such as underwater noise or boats, can disorient marine mammals, Jarvis suggests this incident was likely a natural occurrence of the dolphin getting lost.He explained that hundreds of dolphins frequent the Cornish coast during this time of year, making it common for them to swim up tidal waters like the River Fal near Falmouth. However, due to the dolphin's significant distance inland, the rescue team felt waiting for it to find its way out with the rising tide would be too risky. They chose to intervene and ensure its safe return to the sea. Jarvis advises the public to follow best practices for observing wildlife if they encounter dolphins or other marine mammals in distress
