Police in Northern Ireland received a high volume of calls regarding domestic abuse incidents during the Christmas period, highlighting the issue during the festive season.
Police in Northern Ireland received an average of 92 calls per day regarding domestic abuse incidents over the Christmas period from December 20, 2024, to January 2, 2025. A total of 1,288 domestic abuse calls were received, a decrease of 48 from the previous year when 1,336 were reported. January 1, 2025, saw the highest number of reported domestic abuse incidents with 127 calls, followed by December 27 with 109 and December 26 with 102.
This average of 92 calls per day is lower than the average for the previous five years combined, which saw an average of 98 calls per day. Commissioner Designate for Victims of Crime Geraldine Hanna commented on the statistics, stating that 'it is truly tragic that there was, on average, 92 domestic abuse calls a day to the police over the Christmas period.' Hanna also emphasized the need for continued support for victims and a more effective criminal justice system in handling domestic abuse cases
