Vincent Morgan, 47, has been convicted of murdering Lisa Welford, 49, by drowning her in the River Derwent. The incident occurred in April when Morgan pretended to help Lisa out of the river but instead held her head underwater. Despite being rescued by a passer-by, Lisa died in hospital. Morgan has a history of physical abuse and was under a Domestic Violence Prevention Order at the time.
Vincent Morgan, 47, held Lisa Welford's head under water while pretending to help her out of the River Derwent in Malton. Lisa, 49, was only dragged to safety following the incident in April earlier this year after a passer-by summoned help. However, sadly, she later died in hospital.
Whether it's breaking news straight from a crime scene, live updates from big court cases happening in our region or police appeals, you'll get it all. The jury heard Lisa, speaking on a police bodycam, say how she was so terrified of Morgan she didn't want to give a statement against him. She said that if he was jailed he would only hit her when he came out. They also heard from Lisa's friends how scared she was of him and how she had had to call out police to get him out of her house when he moved in.
"Lisa's numerous and severe injuries, combined with the low-growing branches at the scene, would have made it impossible for Lisa to jump into the river as claimed by Morgan. CCTV uncovered as part of the police investigation, shows Lisa walking unaided, without any sign of injury, towards the river that evening.
