Employers can deduct pay, treat self-isolation as unauthorised absence or even beginning disciplinary proceedings.

During an interview on Sophy Ridge on Sunday, Raab repeatedly said that workers cannot be punished for following the law.

Lawyers were quick to refute these claims at the time, pointing out that people who can’t work from home are not entitled to statutory sick pay unless they have coronavirus symptoms. Employers could continue paying their employees through their self-isolation period, but it is not legally required and therefore unlikely.Tim Sharp, senior policy officer for employment rights at the Trades Union Congress , told Full Fact that employees who receive contractual sick pay may be in a different situation but said it was likely that most ‘would place employers under no obligation to pay their worker.

The government has warned more countries may be added to the quarantine list at any time and that travellers should think about this before they make their trip.
