I don’t doubt David will be aware of the social injustices that Qatar has become infamous for, and his wilful ignorance will certainly tarnish his well-earned respect levels from a loyal fanbase. Over 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh are believed to have died since Qatar was awarded the World Cup.
Yet Qatar isn’t the only country in that homosexuality is outlawed – in fact there’s 69 that criminalise it. Amongst them are some popular tourist destinations like Barbados, Egypt, Jamaica and Morocco. Criticising the former Manchester United star for accepting money to promote the very sport that helped make him a superstar is ironic.
As I mentioned earlier, the death toll of immigrant workers and horrendous living conditions they’re forced to endure has come to the fore. There’s now an overwhelming demand for FIFA to compensate those same workers.
