Wigan has been promised £6m in Levelling Up cash which has yet to be paid out

Wigan ’s three MPs, including culture secretary Lisa Nandy, have written to the deputy prime minister Angela Rayner protesting over delays in the ‘promised’ payment of £6m Levelling Up cash. The hold up in the pay-out to Wigan council means the authority may have to borrow the money as ‘a last resort’ to fund major projects, like the Haigh Hall renovation, which are already underway.

“That never happened. Instead, they were given stagnation, poorer living standards and fewer opportunities. Supporting towns must be at the heart of our strategy for growth." It said that Wigan council had received notification from Ms Rayner’s department informing it of a delay of two months in Levelling Up scheme money. The letter goes on: “This has significant impacts on the three schemes in our area, across Haigh Hall, Leigh and Ashton-in-Makerfield. Haigh Hall’s works are already underway, and the other two are in the early delivery phases.
