With Ashley Jensen taking over from Douglas Henshall for the eighth series, this could be the detective show’s chance to shineand their endless imitators have had their moment in the sun, there is one brooding, Nordic-inflected series that endures. And that is, which tonight returns to BBC One for its eighth series, as fans nervously wait to see whether Ashley Jensen can fill Douglas Henshall’s shoes as the beloved Scottish drama’s star sleuth.
It is a hugely successful export, being shown in the US, Australia, Canada and all across Europe, and an average 5.8 million viewers tuned into each episode of series seven last year – very impressive for the streaming era. What it occasionally lacks in gravitas it makes up for with its endearing, believable characters – there was genuine despair when Henshall’s piercingly blue-eyed DI Jimmy Pérez bowed out at the end of the last series.
Its inhabitants have the highest levels of Viking DNA found anywhere in Britain, it has the highest density of Viking-era sites in the UK and a language derived from Old Norse was spoken there until the 19th century. “The Isles were so much a part of Pérez,” said Henshall before his departure, and the show suggests this is a place that really burrows into people’s psyches. Which might explain why while Pérez may have quit policing in order to finally concentrate on his home life, a fair few of the cast remain unchanged from series one., about an elderly Shetland resident found murdered at her croft.
