At the show's world premiere, Bezos thanked the showrunners for ignoring his input.
, fans have wondered with trepidation: just how involved is Jeff Bezos going to be? Sure, Bezos was always going to bankroll the legendarily expensive project, but would signing the checks entitle him to mucking about with the scripts—or, god forbid, even making a cameo?
After last night’s world premiere for the show, which drops its first two episodes on September 1, we may finally have some answers. Bezos made a rare speech on the London stage, thanking showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne for summarily ignoring his notes on the show."Every showrunner’s dream—and I mean every showrunner—their dream is to get notes on scripts and early cuts from the founder and executive chairman," Bezos."They loved that.
As much as we shudder to think about the guy cutting the checks having a voice in the creative process, we have to give Bezos credit where credit is due: he’s not starting from nothing. Like so many of us, Bezos has been a Tolkienhead since he was a teenager, and he’s spoken at length about his desire to do right by the source material."It goes beyond making a commercially successful show.
You hear that, Jeff? You’re on notice. As for that cameo—stay sharp, friends. We wouldn’t put it past Bezos to cast himself as a jacked elven hero like Glorfindel. Keep your eyes peeled as you watch
