Donald Trump and John Swinney spoke on an introductory phone call to discuss their “social, cultural and economic ties”.
First Minister John Swinney and US President-elect Donald Trump have held an introductory phone call to discuss their “social, cultural and economic ties”.
Swinney said: "Tonight I held an introductory call with President-elect Donald Trump. We discussed a range of issues including the social, cultural and economic ties between Scotland the United States, including the importance of the US market for Scottish exports. I look forward to the two nations continuing to work together."
Trump previously has spoken fondly and extensively in the past about his connection to Scotland through his mum, Mary MacLeod. She was born and raised on the Isle of Lewis near Stornoway before marrying Trump's father after moving to America. "My father loved my mother. My father was German. He was serious...he was a tough guy but he had a good heart. We would walk down the street and if someone had a can my father would always put 100 dollars in the can. He had a tremendous heart. He was no nonsense, he was firm.
