The jurors verdict is"clearly a vindication for E Jean Carroll, ourHe says this is very important for Carroll who said her life was ruined after her encounter with Trump in the 1990s.
To find him liable, the jury of six men and three women was required to reach a unanimous verdict. They deliberated for just under three hours.Jurors had been weighing whether Trump raped or sexually abused her in the 1990s and then defamed her by claiming she made up the story. But Trump's lawyer insisted Ms Carroll had"abused the system" for"money, status and political reasons" and said her inability to recall the date of the alleged incident made it impossible for Trump to defend himself.
He said"It's Marla", referring to his second wife Ms Maples, before his lawyer corrected him saying:"No, that's Carroll." Trump waived his right to testify but jurors saw footage of his October 2022 video deposition, where he defended vulgar comments he made in an"Access Hollywood" video in 2005; Ms Carroll, 79, testified that she had a chance encounter with the former US leader at the Bergdorf Goodman store across the street from Trump Tower in New York.
