Trump ran 'catch and kill' scheme to hush up gossip, prosecutors allege as he denies 34 charges
Donald Trump is expected to make a speech later after he became the first former president to be formally arrested and face criminal charges.
At a court in New York, he pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and falsifying business records relating to hush payments made to two women including porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016, which prosecutors allege were improperly recorded as legal expenses – the first time an ex-US president has faced a criminal case.but was not handcuffed or placed in a jail cell and no mugshot was taken. During the brief hearing, he pleaded not guilty after hearing the charges before being released.
Crowds of his supporters lined the streets and gathered outside Trump Tower – but he made no public comment, beyond a wave to the crowd, on his way to the courtroom and back out to the airport.
