BREAKING: Donald Trump says of police brutality victims: ‘They choke sometimes’
Donald Trump threw his support behind police officers during a visit to riot-hit Kenosha in Wisconsin on Tuesday afternoon threw his support behind the police during a trip to a riot-hit city on Tuesday, saying of victims who died at the hands of police: ‘They choke sometimes.’
Addressing a roundtable about the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday, the President of the United States said of police officers: ‘They have a quarter of a second to make a decision… people have to understand that. They choke, sometimes. It’s a very tough situation. And then people call them bad or horrible.’
The president conceded that there were corrupt cops, saying: ‘You have bad apples, no question, and they will be taken care of in the system.’But Trump vowed to ‘increase police funding substantially,’ and hit out at rival Democrats after politicians in some Democrat-led cities took steps to defund the police.He visited Kenosha just over a fortnight after Blake, 29, was shot in the back multiple times while trying to flee police.
The dad remains in hospital, where he is paralyzed from the waist down. Trump has sought to portray himself as tough on law and order in recent weeks as cities across the US were hit by anti-police brutality protests, as well as rioting and looting. That unrest was triggered by the killing of unarmed black security guard George Floyd, 46, in Minneapolis in May. Floyd died after Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for eight minutes, 46 seconds and was filmed shouting ‘I can’t breathe’ as he slipped away.Developing story, check back for updates
