Doncaster Rovers, once synonymous with football calamity, is now a vibrant and exciting club. The stadium's atmosphere is lively, the team plays progressive football, and the owner is ideal, raising questions about the club's sustainable success.

I went to Doncaster Rovers , who in many ways are the ideal football club with the ideal owner. The question: can it last? You might not automatically assume that Doncaster Rovers would be one of the best experiences in English football. For large parts of the last half century even Donny supporters would have disagreed with you, given what they watched. For those outsiders, this club was synonymous with 1998 and calamity, the banter-est of the banter club threads.

What Doncaster were, what they still are, was a club that made sure it earnt patience for times like these. Their season tickets were amongst the lowest-priced in League Two. Through their Club Doncaster Foundation, they were known across the local area as a club that used its stadium to provide a haven for the vulnerable members of the community. That was the story that supporters told me to focus on. The team would look after itself before long.

“Nobody goes into football to make money and there’s more business nonsense spoken than business sense,” said Bramall in 2013. “However, I do think it’s important that a town like Doncaster has a football team. The place gets a lot of bad press, most of it completely undeserved, the club, the racecourse helps to keep it on the map for the right reasons. If I can help in some way then I will.

This, I think, is the model that most football supporters of clubs outside the financial elite want most. That doesn’t suggest any xenophobia nor a lack of ambition, more than new owners tend to arrive with grand promises that can lead to progress. They can also bring with them uncertainty and overspending or, worse, a gradual breakdown in relationships that provokes stubbornness, anger and eventual decay. Doncaster Rovers know that as well as anyone.

But it’s still damn hard work, for two reasons. Firstly, English football’s finances are skewed against sustainability and towards over-ambition, aided by the vast financial inequalities and the rat race to reach higher divisions that those inequalities provoke. Which plays into the second issue: sustainability is sometimes treated by football supporters as a dirty word because they have been hardwired by the game’s rampant capitalist grab over the last 30 years. Tell them that their club will still be there in 30 years and most will be happy. Tell the same people that their club might not get promoted back to the third tier for three years and plenty won’t. Owners feel the pressure to invest because everybody knows that they can.
