In a bid to tackle rising incidents of shoplifting, Tesco has stepped up its security measures, including the tagging of more food items. Shocked customers at a Doncaster branch stumbled upon prime cut fillet steaks, priced at £48 per kg, secured in netted bags complete with security tags.
One perplexed Reddit user posted an image of the tagged steak captioned: "I'm sorry what the f*** now." The post quickly gathered hundreds of responses from the community. A fellow user remarked: "Mate they've got steaks in secure cases in my local express stores in Cambridge."An individual pointed out: "It's insane but I am not surprised - I saw the same in Waitrose. I have seen in Coop in Cambridge bloke just picked few steaks from the shelf and run out.
Tesco is not new to taking measures against shoplifting; it was reported earlier this year that the retailer had placed security tags on blocks of cheese to prevent theft. Notably, 550g blocks of Cathedral City mature cheddar—which costs £5.95—were seen in a store in Derby with a unique netted bag and security tag.
