It’s all natural to me. I like things to have punchlines, no matter what the form of writing is, and so when I sat down to write this book, it was like, How can I tell this story in the most entertaining way possible? And then the punchlines just started to appear, like clams in the forest.

I actually wrote the bulk of the book in 2017, but right as Covid hit and we were in the process of getting the book out, my agent circled the word “pandemic”, because it was one of the things I had written that the characters would be concerned about in 2017. We were just like, “Oh my God.” She asked me if it was going to be a key concern for the characters in the book, and I decided not to make it one, because I felt like it would become a sort of “Covid book.

I loved the narrative thread of coffee in the book, and it made me wonder what your personal relationship with coffee is like. I hated coffee in college; I thought it was nasty and gross and bitter, but then when I was living in the East Village, my friends and I got ahold of, this completely inside-baseball drip magazine, and we got obsessed with “the new coffee.” We were like, where can we find this? At one point, I was driving around rural North Carolina looking for the Counter Culture nursery, which wasn’t a cafe; when my boyfriend and I found it, they were like, “We don’t sell coffee.
