Bank of Scotland said: “Before we close any branch, we look at how customers are doing their banking. Most customers prefer to use our mobile app, online banking or call us. They also said that a Bank of Scotland Cash In & Out Machine is available at Asda in Toryglen, adding: “It’s free to use, and the cash you pay in will be in your account immediately.
” There is also a Banking Hub in the area and Bank of Scotland continued: “A Banking Hub is already open at: 158 Main Street, Cambuslang, G72 7EL.
“Hubs offer face-to-face banking services on the high street. They’re run by the Post Office and open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. You can do things like: Pay in and withdraw cash and check your balance; pay some bills and top up your gas and electricity; our community banker visits regularly so you can speak to someone in person if you need help or support.
” Closures are being made in areas where customers are preferring to use mobile banking, rather than visiting an in-person branch. It means that Bank of Scotland customers in each area will need to find alternative ways to access their bank and cash. This includes online by using the mobile banking app that is “simple and safe to use”. They can also visit an alternative cash machine or Post Office.
For those who prefer an in-person experience, they can do so by heading to a Halifax or Lloyds branches in the same area since they are part of the same family that owns the Bank of Scotland. We reported earlier in the year that constituency politicians Michael Shanks MP and Clare Haughey MSP had both launched petitions opposing the closure, gaining hundreds of signatures.
Mr Shanks noted that the planned closure will be the second in his constituency alone in little over 12 months following last year’s loss of the Bank of Scotland branch in Uddingston, and says the decision will “have a significant and detrimental impact on local residents”. He previously told the Rutherglen Reformer: “I am deeply disappointed with the decision to close the Rutherglen branch, especially so soon after the loss of nearby services – we’re seeing bank branches close at an alarming rate across the country as local services are reduced and customers are forced to journey further afield.
“I know from speaking to residents that access to a branch which provides cash is essential, particularly older people and those who face digital or mobility challenges; in an era of advanced banking scams and economic hardship, we need to be looking at ways to improve financial support rather than withdrawing it. ”Constituency counterpart Ms Haughey said she was “outraged” by the closure plans, saying the loss of in-person banking services will adversely impact local businesses, charities and organisations.
Ms Haughey previously told the Rutherglen Reformer: “I strongly refute any notion from banks that all banking has moved online and that people do not wish to use local branches – we have seen with the Bank Hub in Cambuslang that this is simply not the case.
“It is imperative that those who lack the means to bank over the internet can bank safely and securely, as well as seek financial advice and support, and that local businesses and organisations can access face-to-face banking. ” A Bank of Scotland spokesperson previously said: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before.
“In addition to our app, customers can use the local Post Office or walk into any Bank of Scotland, Halifax or Lloyds branch to manage their money, and can also deposit cash at PayPoint locations. We’re giving our customers the flexibility to bank wherever and whenever they need us. ”
