More than 20 people are in custody

Dozens of people suspected of keeping a notorious Manchester hotspot awash with illegal drugs have woken to the sound of police at their doors. Hundreds of officers were called up to search properties and arrest suspects believed to be dealing drugs in Piccadilly Gardens .

Detective Superintendent Neil Blackwood, who is leading Operation Vulcan, said: "The community have been telling us for a long time drug dealing is rife in Piccadilly Gardens.

Operation Vulcan launched in the Piccadilly area last September, a year after the same project began in the Bury New Road area. That scheme saw counterfeit traders close their shutters, while officers cracked down on the illegal drug trade in the area. Many of the suspects police had identified were inside the properties and given a shock awakening. Each suspect was led away into a custody van, while officers combed their home for vital evidence.
