The star of Calamity Jane, who dedicated her final years to animal welfare, has died after a bout of pneumonia.
As a child, Day had dreamed of a career as a dancer but at the age of 12, a car she was travelling in was hit by a train and her leg was badly broken.
Her 1976 book Doris Day: Her Own Story, chronicled her money troubles and three broken marriages, and presented a different Day than had been known through the media.
