Police will ramp up enforcement in New South Wales and Victoria over the King’s Birthday long weekend with double demerits coming into effect early Friday morning.

Both states will run preventative operations, however unlike NSW, Victoria don’t employ a double demerits scheme.

“Many people will be undertaking long distance driving to see family and friends and I would like to remind them to ensure they have had sufficient rest before undertaking these journeys. If your feeling fatigued, don’t fight it just pull up and have a sleep or swap drivers,” Mr Waddell said. Victoria will run Operation Regal across the same time of 12.01am Friday to 11.59pm Monday, targeting highways and roads leading to the state’s popular snow destinations as police aim to reduce the worrying trend of lives lost in recent months.Acting Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Martin O’Brien warned Victorians of the road conditions they may face this weekend.
