Down GAA's history is marked by a period of great success from 1959 to 1994, winning multiple Ulster titles, All-Irelands, and National Leagues. However, the last 30 years have been characterized by a stark absence of silverware, raising questions about the reasons behind this prolonged drought.
The period from 1959-1994 covers every major honour that Down have won in senior football. That’s all 12 of their Ulster titles and each of their five All-Irelands. You can throw in the four National Leagues that they’ve won too, all of them coming between 1960 and ‘83. Like, it’s 30 years. It’s actually hard to fathom. Ok, you come up against good teams, you know, that Armagh squad was a good squad, the Tyrone squad, you were coming up against… Donegal, they were good sides. “But still, to be 30 years down the line and we haven’t won an Ulster title in that timeframe. It’s hard to fathom. This is a real… it’s more than a drought, quite frankly.” Even today, people will still quote Down’s seemingly innate ability to win finals, but the facts of the last 30 years paint a different picture. From the 1994 All-Ireland final win over Dublin, Down failed to win the next 13 finals that they played in, be it lower division League deciders, Ulster finals, the All-Ireland final of 2010 or last year’s Tailteann Cup fina
