A new study suggests that downsizing traditional beer pint glasses could lead to people drinking less. While this is one idea being explored to curb alcohol consumption, the science surrounding the impact of alcohol on health remains somewhat unclear. Experts discuss the known health risks associated with excessive drinking and the challenges in determining safe levels of alcohol intake.
-based experiment has found that people can be nudged into drinking less by downsizing the traditional beer pint glass, it was recently announced.
The uncertainty stems from the fact that the most reliable kind of medical research, the randomised trial, would be impossible to carry out when it comes to alcohol. It would be unethical to ask people to drink a certain amount for several years and compare their health to those who drank a smaller amount.
But it’s still unclear, whether all of us, even those who drink at low to moderate levels, should be trying to cut down our alcohol consumption. For a long time, it was thought that light drinking, say about one glass of wine a day, was actually beneficial for health, possibly by reducing heart attacks and dementia.
In other words, while the health risk generally rises as people drink more, on the far-left side of the graph, there is also a small rise in risk for people who never drink. For those who want to take on board the lessons from Professor Marteau’s study, they could try deliberately choosing smaller servings of their chosen drink, whether it’s beer, wine or something else, she said.
