As so many take the day off to celebrate their freedoms, it was important to everyone, including some of the youngest attending the ceremony to remember those who died fighting for those freedoms.
) - It was a moving Memorial Day ceremony on the eastern shore Monday morning as dozens came together at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort. A beautiful performance of the National Anthem by Monica Cosson of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Gulf Breeze kicked off the event.
McLarey got the message. Memorial Day is a day to honor our heroes. He and many others listened to the keynote speaker, J. D. Crowe who was introduced by Chairman of the Alabama State Veterans Cemetery Foundation, Colonel Pat Downing. “To me, this piece of land has an aura about it that you can feel and whether it’s the spirits of the veterans that are buried here or what, I don’t know but I said, whether you have someone who is here and name appears on these white marble markers or not, we can share in the kinship of being here because we’re all American citizens and we want to honor our veterans…those that have passed on, on this day,” Downing explained.
Master Gunnery Sergeant, Cynthia House served in a support role during the Vietnam War and reached the highest enlisted rank for a Marine before she retired. She received the Veteran of the Year Award in 2021 by the South Alabama Veterans Council and said this day and place carry a very special meaning.
