The Prime Minister has argued hiswhich will bar people claiming asylum in the UK if they arrive through unauthorised means, would not breach international laws.

But he could face a rebellion on the Conservative benches from MPs who want the UK to withdraw from aspects of the European Convention on Human Rights . Party insiders said dozens MPs could rebel to back an amendment aimed at circumventing the ECHR, claiming there were a “solid” 30 MPs who would back such a move and 20 more who could add their support., led by Tory MP Jonathan Gullis, gathered the backing of 67 MPs in a vote in December – with Boris Johnson also expressing his support.

The said amendment had sought to circumvent the convention, which is overseen by the European Court of Human Rights. The Strasbourg court infuriated Tory MPs when it previously blocked the Government’s controversial policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda. Mr Gullis said, at the time, that his proposed amendment would have ensured the final say on legislative matters was taken by the UK Parliament and latest amendment being drawn up is expected to follow a similar form.
