Ships loaded with goods are skipping ports where they might be hit by a longrunning wharf dispute and dropping them off somewhere else.

Shipping vessels have started skipping ports and leaving cargo in different states, ratcheting up costs for customers to haul them back, as the wharfies’ union extends its industrial action at DP World terminals to two months.

“Cargo that was destined for Sydney suddenly ends up in Melbourne and has to then be brought back to Sydney later on and it’s creating some quite significant delays. In the past four weeks, ships had skipped DP World’s east coast terminals eight times, moving on to different states where importers are forced to choose between lengthy waiting times or an extra $4500 to transport the container inland.the MUA had an attitude of “if you don’t fight you lose” that was hindering talks.“It almost doesn’t really matter what you ask, what the status is, we have to fight,” he said.

“We cannot just put our head in the sand and say we don’t want to work weekends because we didn’t do that before. For that, we do not back down from because if that means we will be a company that doesn’t listen to our customers and doesn’t adapt to what our customers expect then we are going to be a short-lived adventure here.”
