NHS has reported rise in searches for symptoms after Radio presenter revealed he is suffering from it and Dr Mark Porter warned of 'persistently weak or hoarse voice'

A doctor has said people need to check for a change in their voice for a potentially serious health condition - after TV and radio presenter Jamie Theakston had surgery for laryngeal cancer. Dr Mark Porter, who has appeared on Good Morning Britain, the BBC and This Morning explained what people need to look out for.

Last year there were 2,300 new cases in the UK, most of which were in men and over the age of 60. The average British man still has a 1 in 43 chance of developing it at some stage, a risk that drops to 1 in 96 for women. “A persistently hoarse or weak voice can also be one of the first signs of lung cancer, as one of the nerves that supplies the larynx can be affected by tumours in the lung, leading to partial paralysis of the vocal cords. Which is why urgent investigation of hoarseness typically starts with a chest x-ray.

Dr Porter said that smokers and heavy drinkers are at particular risk of developing it and it could be triggered by occupational exposure to some types of dust and fumes, and is linked to a poor diet low in fruit and vegetables. The human papillomavirus , better known for its role in causing cancer of the cervix in women, is another likely factor.
