Sara Davies, the Dragons' Den star, juggles her busy career with family life. She shares insights into her motivation, her supportive relationship with her husband, and her dedication to her children. The article also explores her post-Strictly transformation, her commitment to health, and her new BBC series, 'The Big Idea Works'.
When we manage to grab a moment with a slightly breathless Sara Davies, it's not long before we get a glimpse into her hectic life as a working mum. The Dragons' Den star, 40, who became the youngest ever female investor on the show in 2019, has just stepped off stage after interviewing Lisa Nandy, the UK's Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, at the government's Creative Industries Growth Summit in Gateshead.
After our conversation, she'll be heading back home to Teesside where she lives with her husband, Simon, and their two boys. Her day started early too, she reveals, as she's 'been up since 5am on a big business negotiation for Crafter's Companion in China'. Just hearing about her daily tasks is tiring, so where does she find the motivation? 'My dad instilled in me that as long as you genuinely love what you do, you don't work a day in your life, and that's honestly how I feel,' she shares. 'I'm all about energy exchange, and as much as it's taken a load of fuel out of my tank to get the emotional energy to deliver that , because of the energy I felt in that room, I feel like I've actually just had a hose pipe plugged into me pumping petrol in.' Another major source of inspiration is her husband Simon, who she's been with since she was 15. The pair tied the knot in 2007 and have two children - Oliver, 11, and Charlie, eight. 'Even after 25 years, I still absolutely idolise the ground he walks on,' she gushes. 'I'm a firm believer that you become a product of the people you surround yourself with, and I know I'm a better person because of his influence on me, and I know I make him a better person as well. There is an absolutely unbreakable trust between us, and I think that's the foundation for any successful marriage.' Considering her bustling work life, we're curious about how much energy Sara has left for family life back home in Durham. 'I'm the mam who likes to say yes to everything. The other week I had a really busy week at work and most people would want to have a pyjama day off, but the kids said, 'Can we go to the cinema and watch Sonic 3, Mam? ' So I said 'Yes! 'And then it was, 'Can we take our friends, and can we have pancakes? ' So I said, 'Of course, let's go pick them all up and let me go and buy some eggs.' So I was making pancakes and feeding the 5,000, but that's what I want. I want to be the house where all the kids want to be, that's just how I am.' Another cherished figure in Sara's world is her Strictly Come Dancing co-star, Aljaž Škorjanec, whom she twirled alongside during the 2021 saga of sequins and sambas. Aljaž, who became a doting dad with his other half Janette Manrara in July 2023, forms part of an exclusive clan with Sara and her husband Simon. The two families are now inseparable—holidaying together and swapping babysitting duties. 'I spent more time with him in those three months than I did with my husband. They're such amazing people, they're more like family than friends now. Post-Strictly, Sara's experienced a wondrous transformation, shedding over 3 stone owing to her newfound zest for exercise and glowing as a 'really happy size 14'. But for Sara, what the scale reads isn't what counts. ' had gestational diabetes in both my pregnancies and as I was leaving the hospital, the nurse told me, 'If you don't get a handle on your weight, you will have type 2 diabetes in 10 years.' With each year, her blood glucose levels edged ever closer to a worrying threshold. Finally, a stark warning from her doctor two years prior 'was the kick up the bum I needed,' she admits. Determined to kick her well-being into high gear post-lockdown, Sara embarked on a sugar-free journey and ramped up her running game. Despite what the scales say, Sara feels her true transformation is seen in how her clothing fits and how wonderful she feels inside out. She's gone down two dress sizes but actually weighs more. She shares, 'Body positivity has never been my issue, I don't want to be a size six or eight. I'm a very happy size 14. I've got big stretch marks and my mum tum, but it's part of being human, and I know I'm healthy, and that's what matters to me.' Elsewhere, Sara is buzzing with excitement for the debut of her brand-new 16-episode BBC series titled 'The Big Idea Works'. It's a hybrid of Dragons' Den meets The Repair Shop, and shows Sara alongside a squad of savvy engineers, turning budding inventors' dreams into tangible products. Amongst the ingenious inventions featured are a 'sugar pen' to decipher sugar levels in beverages, a tidy bird feeder, and a specialised pillow designed to muffle the sounds of snoring. Sara reveals that the show's inception was partly due to the BBC's dedication to creating content outside of London, and her own relentless drive to bolster the creative industry in her beloved North East. She spent three months working with a local production company to devise a forma
