New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye exceeded expectations during his rookie season, silencing doubters who questioned his selection as the team's franchise quarterback. Maye showcased his dual-threat abilities and made significant improvements to his game, particularly in his footwork.
Drake Maye provided New England Patriots fans with a reason to celebrate during an otherwise underwhelming 2024 season. His performance silenced those who doubted his selection as the Patriots' franchise quarterback at the third overall pick. Maye showcased his dual-threat capabilities, completing passes at a 66.6% rate, accumulating 2,276 passing yards, tossing 15 touchdown passes, and adding 421 rushing yards along with two rushing touchdowns.
Chris Simms of NBC Sports was among the skeptics regarding Maye's draft prospects. He questioned Maye's consistency, stating, 'You watch the best games in his (college) career, and yeah, you'll see a few of those (great) throws, but for every one of those throws, there's five of, like, what the hell is that throw?' Simms argued that Maye's inconsistency and need for improvement would prevent him from being a top draft pick. However, after observing Maye's development during his rookie season, Simms has reversed his stance. Speaking on Tom E. Curran's Patriots Talk Podcast from Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Simms admitted his initial assessment was flawed. He acknowledged Maye's significant progress, particularly in his footwork, which was a point of concern during the pre-draft evaluation. Simms praised Maye's athleticism and ability to make consistent, accurate throws, stating, 'Drastically, his motion got tighter and quicker. The legs and the feet were in the right spot.' He concluded, 'I told you my concerns with him in the draft, he was not my favorite. He definitely fixed some of the things I was worried about, and he proved me wrong.
