Archive press photographs capture dramatic Glasgow blaze that tore through printing goods warehouse in August 1970. Three young girls were left injured as firefighters rushed towards the incident.
The east end skyline was aglow on the night of Friday, August 14 1970 as a Dalmarnock paper and printing goods warehouse went up in flames.
A huge crew of 130 firefighters battled throughout the night to try and halt the spread of the inferno, which was being fanned by strong winds. Residents of a nearby tenement had to be evacuated as their building also caught fire. The firefighter behind the wheel saw the girls, aged 15, 11 and 8, too late and swerved the vehicle directly into their path before crashing into the parapet of a bridge. The two eldest sisters were seriously injured in the incident and taken to hospital.
"Damage was confined solely to stocks of raw materials and finished goods awaiting customers' delivery instructions," John Laird & Son Ltd later said in a press statement.
