The Price Is Right host Drew Carey shares his journey with depression, suicide attempts, and the profound impact of his former fiancée Amie Harwick's murder.
Drew Carey has been candid about his long-standing struggles with mental health . The 66-year-old host of The Price is Right, in a recent interview with UsWeekly, revealed the difficulties he faced finding happiness after his father's death when he was just eight years old. He confessed to two suicide attempts, one at the age of 18 and another in his twenties. Carey's life was deeply shaken in 2020 when his former fiancée, Amie Harwick , a therapist, was tragically murdered by her ex-boyfriend.
The pain of losing Amie was profound as he still harbored strong feelings for her at the time of her death, and they had plans to meet and discuss their separation. The loss has had a lasting impact on him, leading him to refrain from dating anyone new. He maintains platonic relationships with women, explaining that he thinks about Amie every day and her death continues to affect his perspective on relationships and intimacy. They had parted ways before her death, but Carey shared that he still loved her deeply. Amie Harwick was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, who was convicted of killing her by strangulation and throwing her from the third-floor balcony of her home. Carey's struggles with depression began in childhood, but through therapy, he has learned to cope with it. He recounted his nail-biting habit, which started at a young age and persisted into adulthood, describing it as a symptom of shame and self-hate. Carey's journey towards healing involved self-help books and therapy, particularly after his initial attempts to take his own life. He acknowledged that he didn't know what he was doing during those attempts, attributing his first suicide attempt to alcohol consumption and ingesting a whole bottle of Sominex, a sleeping aid. Thankfully, his fraternity brothers intervened, taking him to the medical center where he received treatment.Carey described laughing during his recovery, finding humor in his friend's singing of the Sominex jingle while he vomited. Overcoming these challenges, Carey now advocates for mental health awareness and the importance of seeking help
