Drink-spiking will be made a specific criminal offence in England and Wales, with tougher penalties for perpetrators. The announcement aims to increase convictions and deter future attacks.
Drink-spiking is set to become a specific criminal offence in England and Wales, with tougher penalties for perpetrators. The announcement will be made by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who aims to increase the likelihood of convictions and deter future attacks. The move comes after a surge in reported incidents, with nearly 7,000 cases recorded in England and Wales last year.
While the risk may be heightened during the festive season, Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls Jess Phillips stressed that drink-spiking is a year-round threat. Sir Keir Starmer acknowledged the difficulty faced by victims in coming forward to report the crime and the challenges in prosecuting these cases. He emphasized the need for a coordinated response involving police chiefs, industry leaders, and transport officials to protect women from becoming targets, particularly when they are out with friends or traveling home. Workers in the night-time economy will receive training on preventing drink-spiking incidents, supporting victims, and assisting law enforcement in collecting evidence
