The country's biggest celebration of African and Caribbean music comes to Liverpool this weekend
The Liverpool festival is the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture and takes place this year on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand.
This year's headliners include Les Amazones d'Afrique on Saturday and Julian Marley, fresh from his Grammy win for Best Reggae Album, on Sunday. But Africa Oyé is about more than music, and there will also be more than 90 stalls selling food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion.READ MORE: Mum was laughed at when she made impulsive decision to quit £50k job
Paul Duhaney, artistic director of Africa Oyé said: "We have always prided ourselves on booking headliners that wouldn't be out of place on the best ticketed festivals in the country and this year is no different. Les Amazones d'Afrique are the definition of a supergroup - so much talent coming together to create something really special, and it's great to see their new album getting mainstream attention on the likes of 6Music.
"And with Julian Marley you've got a reggae superstar that has truly emerged from his father's shadow - you don't win Grammys without being an incredible talent in your own right and it'll be a Sunday night for the history books when he closes the festival this year."Drinks prices at Africa Oye festival: Draught
