The PSNI has condemned reckless speeding after a driver was caught traveling at 103 mph on the motorway. The incident follows recent road death figures that show 68 fatalities and 738 serious injuries in Northern Ireland in 2024.

In a brief tweet on the Police Antrim and Newtownabbey X account, officers said: “Armed response officers recently detected a motorist traveling at a shocking 103 mph on the motorway. Such reckless speeding endangers everyone on the road. This individual was reported to the Public Prosecution Service. Speed limits are there to save lives. Drive responsibly.”

The incident came after latest road death figures showed that 68 people died in Northern Ireland last year. And between January 1 and September 30 2024, 738 people were seriously injured on local roads. At the end of last year, Roads Minister John O’Dowd said: “In 2024, 68 people have had their lives cut short and hundreds more have been seriously injured on our roads. I wish to offer my sincere sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones and to those who endure life-changing injuries through road collisions.

“In the north, the death rate on our roads is, on average, one per week. That means every single week, at least one person – a mum, a dad, a son, a daughter, a friend - is not coming home to their family and their loved ones. Lives are shattered and will never be the same again. “We all expect to be safe when using our roads but that isn’t the reality for everyone. We all know what we should do, yet too many people take risks.”
