A driver who killed a man and seriously injured his carer while trying to evade police has been sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison. Ryan Skelton, 23, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Leicester Crown Court on December 13. On September 12, just after 10:30 BST, police received a call from a member of the public about Skelton's erratic driving.
Officers approached him, but he attempted to escape, colliding with a metal fence. He then sped off and mounted the kerb, striking Anthony Haynes, 66, and Rachael Newton, 56, who were walking on the pavement. Mr. Haynes died from his injuries eleven days later, while Ms. Newton sustained life-changing injuries and continues to recover. Detective Constable Madeleine Hayes from Leicestershire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said, 'This is a tragic incident that has had a major impact on Mr. Haynes' family, Ms. Newton, and her family. Sadly, his recklessness resulted in an innocent person losing their life and another sustaining life-changing injuries.'
