DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — An intoxicated driver, who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in the October 2022 deaths of a mother and son on I-25 near Castle Rock, was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.
The mother and son stopped along the shoulder of the northbound lanes of I-25 at around 10:30 p.m. that night to change a tire when a Colorado State Patrol Trooper parked behind Villarreal’s disabled vehicle to assist the family. Mother and son struck and killed by alleged DUI driver after stopping to fix flat tire “This defendant’s actions have permanently torn apart a family,” said Senior Deputy DA Corrie Caler in a release. “This preventable tragedy took the life of a beloved mother, wife, and grandmother, along with her 18-year-old son who was just beginning his life.”
“While no sentence can eliminate the pain and grief the Villarreal family is going through, I sincerely hope it provides some closure and justice for them,” said Chief Deputy DA Garrik Storgaard. “This defendant had no business being on the road that night after drinking.
