Someone parking over your driveway can cause real frustration when trying to get home.
There are just a few things are more frustrating than coming home from work to find a car blocking your driveway, making it impossible to enter. Whether the car belongs to a total strange or a neighbour, all you want to do is move it for yourself, so you can park in your driveway.
The driving guidelines were revised in 2022, introducing several important changes, particularly emphasising the "hierarchy of road users"—prioritising pedestrians and placing greater responsibility on larger vehicles for road safety. The Somerset Live reports that rules 239 to 252 of the Highway Code deal with parking, with Rule 243 urging drivers not to stop or park "in front of an entrance to a property". However, there is no criminal law in place to penalise motorists who dump their car on someone else's property. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The police recommend that if anyone is bothered by a neighbour blocking their driveway, just to politely ask them to move it. However, if you can't locate the owner or are unsure who the car belongs to, it is advised to leave a note on the windscreen. Legally, leaving a car on someone else's property counts as trespassing, which is a civil offence. Although, the police cannot intervene with unidentified vehicles since it's not a criminal matter and occurs on private property. The only exception is if the car is abandoned - in that case, your local council may be able to help with its removal. Additionally, if a car is parked on a public road and obstructing a driveway, the driver is committing a parking violation. For those who are new to getting behind the wheel, one driving instructor has shared the common road signs which often lead Brits to fail their test - and they're very easy to mix up.
