Drivers heading to France have been told to expect queues of up to three hours after the Port of Dover declared a critical incident last night
, which it said were caused by “lengthy French border processes and sheer volume” as people head abroad for the Easter holidays.
P&O Ferries also cited two to three-hour wait times for coaches queuing to cross the Channel this morning. The ferry firm apologised to customers, saying: “We know this isn’t the ideal start to your trip but our teams are ready to welcome you onboard once checked in.”parked at the port overnightFrench teacher Anne-Cécile Gasnot has been stuck on a coach with 48 children aged 14 to 16 for eight hours.
“I really don’t understand the situation. Apparently, the French [officials] who check your passports, there are only two of them. On Friday, Tim Cotterill waited 12 hours on a bus with a party of 22 from the Western Front Association heading to Arras in France for a tour of First World War battlefields.
“The French used to come on the coach pre-Brexit, walk up the line looking at your passport and you didn’t even need to get off the coach.“It doesn’t seem like they [the British and French] are working together. Sunak and Macron, if it goes that high, need to talk to each other. After leaving York at 6pm last night, they were due to arrive in Austria at 5pm this evening, now now facing having to wait until tomorrow morning near Dover to board a ferry.
