Medway Council in Kent installed 24/7 'school streets' outside seven schools in September to cut congestion and improve air quality - and the move has raked in thousands of pounds
Drivers are up in arms over a £70 parking fine outside schools, which has seen a council rake in thousands following the end of a six-month parking grace period. Since September 11, motorists who ignore the driving ban within certain zones face a £70 penalty, halved to £35 if settled within 21 days as part of the scheme by Medway Council in Kent.
A freedom of information request disclosed a spike in fines at each of the seven school sites post-grace period. Cllr Alex Paterson, responsible for community safety, highways and enforcement, stands by the decision for the sake of children's safety, stating: "Every month, around 1,200 children are injured on the road, on their way to school, within 500 metres of their school."
He added: "So if we can take as many cars as we can out of that equation, then that inherently makes those journeys safer. The simple message to anyone ignoring these signs is: stop, read the signs, and follow the rules. This isn't difficult. At this stage, we can say safely people know what the rules are.
"I'm happy the figures are moving in the right direction, and the number of PCNs being issued is reducing month on month as the message gets through. But you have to remember that every single one of those PCNs is a driver who has either carelessly, recklessly, or deliberately ignored the rules and put children in danger.
