Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) contractors began widening and grading the roadbed along Highway 31 this week. It’s going to take about three months to get to the finish line. Meanwhile, drivers heading north from Highway 181 are having to get used to a detour.

It’s a $1.56 million project to add a center turn lane to a section of the highway.
The detour takes northbound traffic around the construction zone on Old Hwy. 31, rejoining Highway 31 about a mile up, at Pinyon Drive. Southbound traffic will experience a lane shift, but no detour. “There was a center turn lane before that section and after that section. It was constructed years ago, so now we’re completing that gap that was missing,” explained ALDOT spokesperson, James Gordon. “It was necessary because as you can tell, there have been more businesses and more development in the area, so people are needing a safe place to turn.”
