Motorists are using a number of 'staggeringly simple' methods to avoid detection by speed cameras and evade fines, with police and local authorities now clamping down on the covert operations.
Motorists are using 'ghost plates' to avoid detection by speed cameras, as these unique plates reflect light and obscure the registration from traditional enforcement tools. These illegal 3D and 4D number plates are becoming increasingly popular, prompting police forces to equip themselves with advanced cameras capable of detecting them.
Councillor Craig Collingswood, who oversees environmental and climate change issues at Wolverhampton City Council, has heralded the city's new anti-evasion technology. Speaking to BirminghamLive, Councillor Collingswood said: "Wolverhampton is leading the way as the first council investing in this state-of-the-art technology to deter and detect offenders."
Despite highly advanced technology, he pointed out that there's still a slight margin of error in automatic number plate recognition—a 97% accuracy rate results in around 2.4 million misreads every day, risking penalties for innocent drivers.
