A prisons watchdog has warned that the regular use of drones to deliver weapons and contraband to two high-security prisons in England is a growing national security threat. The chief inspector of prisons, Charlie Taylor, stated that guns and other dangerous items could be smuggled into HMP Manchester and HMP Long Lartin, posing risks of armed violence, escapes, and hostage-takings. Taylor's reports highlighted serious security and safety failings at both prisons, including ineffective CCTV, inadequate anti-drone measures, and inmates breaking windows to facilitate deliveries.

He told BBC News the prison authorities had "ceded the airspace" over the jails and there was an increasing risk of armed violence, escapes and hostage-takings. "The potential for them to be able to commit serious offences within prison, or potentially to be able to escape or to cause something like a hostage situation is an enormous concern."Mr Taylor said gangs were now using drones carrying payloads of up to 3lb of contraband into prison."Knives indeed are getting in," he said.
