A swimming teacher at Drayton Junior School near Norwich has been banned from the profession after he was found to be intoxicated during a lesson with a class of young pupils. Liam Knight, 30, admitted consuming both alcohol and medication before the lesson, leading to slurred speech, unsteadiness, and difficulty focusing. The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel concluded that Knight's actions constituted unacceptable professional conduct and banned him from teaching for two years.

Liam Knight, a 30-year-old swimming teacher, has been banned from the profession after a series of concerning incidents at Drayton Junior School near Norwich. During a swimming lesson in September 2023, Knight was observed by pupils and staff to be exhibiting signs of intoxication. He slurred his words, had bloodshot eyes, and struggled to maintain his balance and focus. A bottle of rosé wine, which Knight had purchased during his lunch break, was later discovered in the staff toilets.

The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel concluded that Knight was guilty of misconduct and banned him from teaching for two years, with the possibility of reinstatement after that period. The incident occurred just a month after Knight had started his position at Drayton Junior School. He admitted to consuming both alcohol and medication before the swimming lesson, although he could not recall the specific details of his drinking. Knight stated that he likely drank the wine directly from the bottle. His erratic behavior and inability to properly conduct the lesson raised serious concerns about his fitness to teach. The TRA panel found that Knight's actions constituted unacceptable professional conduct. They noted that he failed to take a headcount, perform a register, and deviated from the usual conduct of the swimming lesson. Knight himself acknowledged that he was not in a fit state to be responsible for his class or to be in the pool. The ban serves as a clear reminder of the expectations and responsibilities placed upon teachers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a professional standard and prioritizing the safety and well-being of students
