Ducati is leaning towards using the proven GP24 engine for its new GP25 MotoGP bike, despite having a brand-new engine option available. This decision is influenced by the upcoming two-year engine freeze in 2025 and a desire to minimize risks.
Ducati is leaning towards using the 2024-spec GP24 engine for its new GP25 MotoGP bike, despite the availability of a brand-new 2025 engine. This decision stems from the impending two-year engine freeze scheduled to commence in 2025. Both factory Ducati riders, Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia , spent considerable time during the Sepang test comparing the GP24 and GP25 engines.
They emphasized the need to ensure any new engine offered a substantial enough improvement to warrant homologation for the next two years.During the Buriram test in Thailand, both riders appeared to favor the GP24 engine. Ducati Corse Sporting Director Paolo Tardozzi confirmed this preference, stating that the decision is likely to be finalized tonight. While the final call rests with Gigi Dall'Igna and the engineers, Tardozzi expressed that his intuition points towards the GP24. This isn't Ducati's first instance of choosing an older engine for its new bike. The factory team made a late switch to a hybrid 2021/2022 engine for the GP22, a decision that proved advantageous. Bagnaia went on to clinch the championship, while the Pramac duo utilizing the full 2022-spec engine managed only eight podiums combined.Tardozzi attributed the inclination towards the GP24 to the upcoming two-year engine freeze. He explained that Ducati aims to minimize risks over the next two years and the GP24 engine, known for its reliability and positive feedback, appears to be the safest bet. Tardozzi addressed concerns regarding both riders' performance during a practice start session, attributing it to different training programs and the use of hard tires. He also downplayed the issue, stating that other manufacturers faced similar challenges and expressed confidence that Marc and Pecco will perform well in the upcoming race.
