The Duchess of Edinburgh was pictured putting a comforting hand on Prince William's shoulder following their appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony during Trooping the Colour today.

This is the moment the Duchess of Edinburgh put her hand on Prince William 's shoulder in a display of comfort following their appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony during today's Trooping the Colour.

As the royals started filtering back into Buckingham Palace after watching the flypast from the balcony, Sophie was seen gently placing her hand on William's shoulder, suggesting how fond she is of the future King. And he has been supporting his wife Kate, who was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year, and has also been undergoing treatment.

Sophie was dressed for the occasion, donning a bright yellow dress from Beulah London and a Jane Taylor hat, channelling Spring on a rainy day in London. Kate joined members of the Royal Family to watch a spectacular flypast by the RAF as she made a triumphant return to public life at Trooping the Colour.

But with the King also suffering from cancer, today's spectacle of military pomp and pageantry became a symbolic statement by the monarchy after much uncertainty. Kate was surrounded by other members of the family - with her husband Prince William , Colonel of the Welsh Guards, on horseback, along with Princess Anne , Colonel of the Blues and Royals, and Prince Edward , Colonel of the Scots Guards.

Trooping the Colour is a social as well as a ceremonial occasion and the stands overlooking the parade ground were filled with about 8,000 spouses, girlfriends and parents of the guardsmen and officers on parade.
