Profar had the winning hit Monday and celebrated in front of the Nationals’ dugout. The Nationals weren’t pleased with that.
Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz confronts the Padres' Jurickson Profar before his first-inning at-bat Tuesday night in San Diego. sinking the Washington Nationals, 7-6
. As he rounded first base and the winning run scored, Jurickson picked his spot to celebrate — right over by the Nationals’ dugout. Profar, as he told reporters after the game, “felt disrespected” that the batter before him, Luis Arraez, had been intentionally walked. Perhaps that was the cause for the location of his celebration.
Before Tuesday’s game, there were rumblings that a handful of Nationals, including catcher Keibert Ruiz and outfielder Jesse Winker, had taken exception to the incident. As Winker made the last out of the top of the first inning, he sent some words in Profar’s direction. As Profar, hitting second, stepped into the batter’s box in the bottom half, Ruiz walked up and initiated a conversation, tapping on Profar’s chest with his pointer finger as Profar — at first — did not make eye contact.
On the first pitch of Profar’s at-bat, MacKenzie Gore hit him in the leg with a 97.7-mph fastball. With no ejections handed out — yet — Shildt came back out to yell and was tossed. One more pitch later, Machado hit a two-run homer off Gore, sending Petco Park to an intensity level not even exceeded by Monday’s walk-off win.Profar rounded the bases and raised his arms toward the crowd, then waited for Machado to touch home plate before Profar dusted off his shoulder.
