John Rodgers has spent 58 years volunteering with St Patrick’s FPs and the Scottish Amateur FA, with the 79-year-old becoming one of the best known faces in the local game.
An amateur football stalwart from Dumbarton has admitted he thought a birthday honour from King Charles was a wind-up at first.
“It came in an email. It was the last day and they’d been trying to get me, but the email had gone to the wrong part of my email. I thought it was a scam! John, who joked that he was “hopeless” as a player, first got involved with Saints as a supporter - watching friends pull on the green and white. He explained: “People I worked with were playing for the club and I just went down to watch. But you get sucked in.“I wasn’t a committee person and the club wasn’t run in the great order that it is today.“I had transport, which helped, so that was my role. I wasn’t any great player but I could help out organising.“Then I found myself on their committee.
Tommy told the Lennox: “Everyone involved with our club, from the management team, committee, players and supporters are absolutely thrilled to see John get the recognition his dedicated service for the past 58 years to St Pats and Scottish Amateur Football richly deserves.
