Mark D. Cooks and Greg Contreras vie to lead this city of 40,000 as the current mayor retires.
Duncanville has faced some hardships in recent years.have left Duncanville City Hall with scars. The current mayor isn’t running for reelection, and two candidates are looking to take the seat. This is an opportunity for a fresh start, and we think former City Council member Mark D. Cooks is the better candidate.Cooks and his opponent, Mayor Pro Tem Greg Contreras, have devoted themselves to the city, bringing ample experience and community ties.
Whoever wins this election, we’re convinced Duncanville’s mayorship will be in good hands. But we tip to Cooks for his more open attitude toward growth. Like many Texas cities, Duncanville is feeling the effects of the state’s massive growth. In the Voter Guide, Cooks supported developing strategic growth plans for the city.Duncanville has been known as an unfriendly city for business, Cooks said, and he wants to change that. According to the city’s, property taxes account for about 55% of the city’s general fund revenue.
On public safety, Contreras and Cooks agreed that it’s critical to make sure the needs of the police and fire departments are met. Like many other cities, Duncanville has had difficulties with recruiting and retaining police officers and firefighters, and the city doesn’t have a permanent police or fire chief at the moment.
With nearly 40,000 residents, Duncanville is going to need a mayor who helps guide these crucial city functions. Cooks is the better option to lead the city into a period of growth and renewal and bring stability back to City Hall..
